Ms. Joyce’s University Tour Continues…“What is a Community College?”

Hello from City College of San Francisco!

CCSF is a community college, which may lead you to wonder, “what is a community college?”

A typical USA university undergraduate degree is four years, but a community college degree (called an associate’s degree) takes two-years to complete. Some students will graduate with the associate’s degree and then start a career from there, and others will go on to transfer to a four-year university. There are many potential advantages of starting at a community college and then transferring after two years, and at the top of that list is the cost! Starting off at a small school with personalized attention and low tuition is something that more and more students are considering these days.

Fun Fact! First Lady Jill Biden is a community college professor, and she gave a recent commencement address at a Los Angeles community college last week.

CCSF is one of about a thousand community colleges in the USA. Here’s a sample of the academic and career communities that colleges like CCSF offer. Also, here is a link to the college’s career assessment tool-take the assessment to explore career options that are suitable for you.
(In case you are wondering, I took the assessment, and it says my top three traits are “Artistic, Social, and Enterprising,” and that my top career match is “Education and Training.” Go figure! Feel free to share your top matches in the comment section and discuss with your classmates and family.
