Community is a fundamental aspect of our experience of Music—it tends to unite people, forming bonds that might not exist otherwise. It connects different cultures and age groups while promoting diversity and growth. Music encourages creative thinking, discipline, leadership, and problem solving. It is also a medium for individual and group expression—as Hans Christian Andersen said, “Where words fail, music speaks.”
At Uplands, we aim to foster a strong sense of community while building further on the school values – Respect, Inquiry, Collaboration, Resilience, Balance, Diversity and Integrity. The Music Co-curricular programs aim to sustain an active and engaging musical environment where diversity and collaboration are celebrated and students are encouraged and inspired to participate. Every student at Uplands has access to Music through a wide range of opportunities.
The school offers a wide range of opportunities for students to actively engage in the process of Music-making. Our Music programme encourages students of all abilities and age to participate.
A number of events feature regularly in our School calendar which allows students the opportunity to perform to peers and the wider school community.
Some of the regular performance events include:
As much as possible, the Music Department aims to facilitate excursions and ‘in-school’ performances/workshops to further encourage and inspire students and to gain a wider perspective of the Arts. A sampling of such events include:
This programme is open to all students. The countless hours that go into individual music tuition provide the basis of school ensemble-playing and much more besides. The school has a wide selection of instruments available for interested students and will assist in finding an instrumental tutor for private lessons.
In our academic staff, we are lucky to have teachers with professional instrumental performance experience and in addition, facilitate professional musician visits to the school, to run masterclasses, workshops and to perform and further inspire students.
There are numerous opportunities within the school year to perform for the Uplands community and the wider public.
